"'Ravenhill's brilliant poisonous satire' Sunday Times 'Ravenhill has more to say, and says it more refreshingly and wittily, than any other playwright of his generation' Time Out"

Product Description

Two bold new dramas from the author of Shopping & F***ing The CutPaul is an ordinary man with a shocking secret. At home, he is a loving husband and father. At work, he administers the cut. In a society sickened by his profession, Paul struggles with his conscience and longs to tell the truth. The Cut has its world premiere at the Donmar Warehouse, London, on 23 February 2006, starring Ian McKellan.Product'I love your work, I love it. I've seen you do those turns on a sixpence .You're fabulous. And this material is going to be fabulous once it's punched up.' Amy is a hot young starlet. Now all she needs is the script which will save her from B movie hell, a script which balances artistic integrity with blockbuster bucks. Mark thinks he's got the perfect pitch - a script which combines a torrid love story with the dark spectre of terrorism and big, big explosions. If he can only persuade Amy, he's got the perfect Product. Mark Ravenhill starred in this monologue piece when it premiered to critical acclaim at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, in August 2005.' Ravenhill has more to say, and says it more refreshingly and wittily, than any other playwright of his generation' Time Out'There are few stage authors writing more interestingly than Mark Ravenhill He is -- it is now yet more evident -- a searing, intelligent, disturbing sociologist with a talent for satirical dialogue and a flair for sexual sensationalism' Financial Times'Compelling viewing' Guardian (on The Cut at the Donmar Warehouse)

3.0 out of 5 stars modern drama, 10 April 2008
By Bernd Kotz (Essen, Germany) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The cut is about how we go on in life. For John the cut is a custom. He is longing his whole life for the cut. It is an escape out of this bleak world. For him the cut is a relief, like it is the last fix for a junky. Paul assists the cut. He is longing for an end too. But he has not the strength the leave the cut. He is looking for a last repentance of his deed. He needed outside help to release him form his responsibilities.
I think the lack of changing the society is the main aspect of the drama. New situations must come from ourselves and not from outside. Ravenhill drew the circumstances in very thin lines. The imprisonment of Paul is not really mentioned in the text. You read it form a single line. It concentrates on the fighting against the inner feeling of the actors. It is a gloomy drama like the process or 1984.

The second play is about a film producer and an actress. They are rehearsing the script about Amy and Mohammed. It is a love situation of a one night stand. The woman lost a friend on 9/11 and her love is full of resentment and hates. They drama play with the fears and problems we have since then. It makes you think about freedom and values you have. The film is on the brim what we will have in the future.
