4.0 out of 5 stars Comic Pathos, 13 Mar 2003
By A Customer
I first picked this book up in a large chain bookstore when I was randomly browsing. The amusing, childish line drawings caught my attention and I started flicking through it. The poems are a beautiful combination of pathos and humour, with the author remarking on some of the events of his childhood and his favourite subjects:glasses, dogs and family. If I had to pigeon hole Hegley I would say he was a male Wendy Cope, as his poems have the same relevance and comic nature as hers, although his are more often written in free verse.
This book made me laugh, whilst my heart ached at some of the events described (such as john who was so lonely he pretended his TV was a dog). Definitely worth a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this book and find true, if temporary, love, 16 Feb 1999
By A Customer
I've always been interested in people in a romantic way for the wrong reasons. I fell in love with one man because he wrote a song about yoghurt. John Hegley writes poems about dogs (and other things). Yoghurt man went off quite quickly. John Hegley would probably think I'm barking.
