Product Description

Synopsis
Drawing upon original documents and first-hand accounts, this text tells the story of Britain's anti-aircraft defences on the home front during World War II: in the Battle of Britain, the Blitz, and the Luftwaffe's cruel campaigns against cathedral cities and coastal resorts. Commissioned to support English Heritage's initiatives to preserve England's wartime remains, this book is also a study of the everyday places where the battle was fought. Thousands of gun batteries were built during the war and by exploring their design and patterning, the book offers a new perspective of Britain's defence geography and rediscovers the sites which were home to hundreds of thousands of men and, controversially, women. As the second volume in the series "Monuments of War" it makes a powerful case for selected examples to be preserved as historical monuments.

5.0 out of 5 stars What an Excellent book!!, 15 Feb 2005
By Pillboxer1940 (Walmington-on-Sea, UK) - See all my reviews
This truly is an excellent book! The most detailed book on the history of overlooked force that played a key part in the defence of this country during WW2. Packed with the best history of AA Command, direct from the records, there are top archaeological drawings of AA positions etc and great photos too. There is a very good appendix listing all the heavy AA gunsites in Britain too. This book is basically the same as the 1950's thick official histories of WW2. So recommend you get this - you won't be disappointed, I assure you!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 6 Jul 2009

(REAL NAME)
An outstanding tome of information.

This 600 page hardback is a fantastic overview of British anti-aircraft defence development since the turn of the 19th century.

'AA Command' chronicles the development of British anti-aircraft defences through both the written record and material culture; and is exemplary in its delivery. Colin writes with clarity and this volume is a joy to read. Contained within, are detailed accounts of how British air defence developed from it's infancy prior to the first world war, to within the reluctant political and financial context of the pre-war years, Colin follows on by meticulous accounts of enemy air activity during the Second World War with such flow of detail, you can't help but feel an expert on the subject once you finish the book. An outstanding read!

There are numerous contemporary photos and beautifully rendered diagrams contained within this hard back, which is of the highest quality.

This book is a must read for anyone interested in both world wars, aviation, artillery and of course the archaeology of the 20th century air defences.
