Product Description

Product Description
In the 1920s and 1930s Noel Coward mastered and defined the art of the revue sketch - short and often topical or satirical stage pieces, many of which were a lead-in to his famous songs. He wrote these sketches for the top revues of the 1920s and 1930s, including London Calling! (1923) and Cochrane's Revue of 1931. This volume collects Coward's best and most witty pieces, including Rain Before Seven, the only sketch he performed with Gertrude Lawrence, and the hilarious parody, Some Other Private Lives, in which Coward burlesques his own famous play, Private Lives. Also included are short one-act plays never before published. The collection includes an Introduction by Coward scholar Barry Day, setting the work in the context of its time and its dramatic form. A forgotten area of Coward's writing is now back in print.

5.0 out of 5 stars Overlooked side of Coward's work presented in new anthology, 22 Sep 2001
Unlike many of the volumes that make up 'The Coward Collection', 'Collected Revue Sketches And Parodies' has never been published in this form before. Edited and informatively annotated by Coward historian Barry Day and prefaced by Coward biographer Sheridan Morley, many of the pieces that feature in this new anthology were feared lost. Revue was an important vehicle for Coward that allowed him to use and hone the whole range of his talents as a singer, songwriter, actor, producer and director, and indeed it was in revue that Coward scored some of his earliest triumphs. However it is because of his success as a playwright that his work in revue was in danger of not only being overlooked, but also forgotten altogether; that is until now. Spanning two decades, this anthology brings us what it considers to be the best of Coward's revue writing, from his earliest success with 'London Calling!' through the smash hits 'On With The Dance' and 'This Year Of Grace!' on to his last complete revue 'Sigh No More' in 1945, by which time the tide was turning and revue was rapidly becoming unfashionable.

In addition to famous sketches such as 'The Swiss Family Whittlebot', a clever and amusing satire on the Sitwells, that started a forty year feud between themselves and Coward, and the parody of 'Private Lives', where the ultra-sophisticated Elyot and Amanda characters are replaced by Cockney counterparts Fred and Flossie, there are several early Coward pieces, some of which were never staged and subsequently have never appeared in print before.

Not only does this anthology provide an excellent insight into Coward and his work in revue, it also serves as a document and a celebration of a long-lost bygone era in theatrical entertainment.
