Female impersonation is indeed a rather curious career choice for a woman, but the Talented Ms Nagy does not finish there. Phyllis Nagy introduces us to characters who take us into other worlds. Set in America, these plays investigate the limitations of the American Dream and the idea of what constructs such as 'society' and 'family' are.

Set in New York after the hate-crime killing of a gay man, in 'Weldon Rising' Nagy forces her characters and audience to examine issues of personal responsibility as the city melts around them. 'Disappeared' is about the disappearance of a central character, and looks at the lies people tell and the dreams they hide. 'Butterfly Kiss' explores the often-idealised mother-daughter relationship and looks at the claustrophobia within the family environment. Lilly finds escape for and from her mother through matricide, and from her father's voyeuristic control of her sexuality through a relationship with a woman. 'The Strip' is a wonderfully structured play whose characters' mysterious lives are connected by the more mysterious Otto Mink who takes the play to its fantastical Las Vegas conclusion. The couplings of the many characters change, and with them their sexual orientation in a gloriously celebratory exploration of sexuality, destiny, and dreams.

Value for money is excellent, the plays better. Visions that will stay with you.
