Product Description

Product Description
The complete collection of Buchner's plays in one volume Buchner was acknowledged by figures as divergent as Antonin Artaud and Bertolt Brecht to be the forefather of modern theatre. On his death at the age of 23, he left behind some outstanding dramatic works: his historical drama, Danton's Death, 'the most remarkable first play in European culture' (Guardian), translated here by Howard Brenton and Jane Fry; the innovatory tragedy, Woyzeck, translated by John Mackendrick; and the absurdist comedy, Leonce and Lena, translated by Anthony Meech. He also left a powerful short story, Lenz, an important account of his research into cranial nerves, and his revolutionary pamphlet, The Hessian Courier. All these are collected in this one volume and supplemented with a selection of his remarkable letters.

5.0 out of 5 stars READ THIS!, 30 Dec 2003
If you have been directed Buchner's way by hints here, mentions there, then keep going. Buchner, writing in the early/mid 19th century, influenced many writers and artistic movements after him, particularly the 20th century expressionists. This book includes, among other things, the wonderful historical play, Danton's Death, written during six weeks while Buchner was on the run from the police; the working class tragedy, Woyzeck, a play so modern and terse in its language and style that it could have been written today; a revolutionary tract, anticipating Marx's writing; a scientific account of the cranial nerve system; and some of the most beautiful and heartbreaking letters, written by Buchner to his family and lover, you will ever come across - Buchner died in exile, at the age of 23.

Buchner is less well-known than he should rightfully be; but be assured that once you have read this book, you will join the ranks of those - artists and general readers alike - who have sung his praises for 150 years. This translation is particularly interesting, as proper introduction and context is given to Buchner's life and works, and textual inaccuracies and confusions highlighted carefully - ie, Buchner never finished Woyzeck, dying as he did in the midst of its composition - this translation highlights the different versions of the play, and gives an idea of what Buchner was attempting to create during those last moments of life.
