Product Description

Product Description

There is an increasing amount of legal information available of use to the lawyer on the World Wide Web. However, the lack of a suitable classification system to identify and guide users through the maze of legal and related sites can prove to be both time-consuming and inefficient. This new edition of Researching the Legal Web offers an informative and critical review of legal websites by describing the sites available and assessing the information provided to help lawyers find the relevant material for which they are researching - quickly and easily. This second edition has been completely rewritten and updated to include both Scottish and Irish websites and also includes chapters on Who and What is on the legal web, law publishers on the web, legal resources in each area of law, lawyers doing business on the web, intranets and extranets and international resources. Several guest authors have contributed articles in particular subject areas to enhance the overall coverage of the book. The two authors, Delia Venables and Nick Holmes, both acknowledged experts on the legal web, have independently maintained websites for the last five years, providing the major and most widely used 'Portals' to the legal web in the UK. No other 'starting point' websites come close to theirs. The provision and maintenance of the websites, and the constant and ongoing research involved in keeping them up to date, has enabled them to write this book, quite simply the most authoritative exposition of the current state of the UK legal web.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading, but more work needed., 3 Dec 1999
By A Customer
This book is essential reading for all lawyers. Professional support and information specialist will find it particularly useful.

Both Nick Holmes and Delia Venables are well respected this field and the book is clear evidence of their capabilities. However, there is room for improvement. The discussion of Crown copyright is an excellent summary but they disappointingly avoid the sister topic of parliamentary copyright. In my mind this is an unacceptable omission which could be rectified with an additional page of text.

To say that the book lacks adequate guidance on the availability of international material is being polite. Even the novice in this area could supply more information than that provided. However it is probably fair to say that such coverage was far from a main objective.

This book is missing at least 200 pages and if it were a thesis it would undoubtedly fail. Easy reading for the novice, which at the end of the day includes most legal practitioners, this book is a disappointment for anyone with a passion for legal information. Despite this fact I think it is a useful addition to all public and private legal collections. It will certainly be an addition to my own once they have release two more editions.

I give it four crowns only because I was not given the option of three and a half.
