5.0 out of 5 stars Still the best after all these years!, 17 Jul 1999
By A Customer
Field guides come and go, but Roger Tory Peterson remains the master. While it would be nice to have an update, encompassing the latest information on classification and new arrivals, for 99% of the birders 99% of the time, Peterson is indispensable!

I started using Peterson guides in 1950 and have bought every update since. Never once have I failed to find a bird which I saw clearly in these books. I would not think of birding anywhere in the U. S. without a Peterson guide in my pocket.

The range maps are located at the back of the book instead of with the text, which is a minor drawback. But the key to the book's success is Peterson's paintings, which are precise and accurate in a way which no other painter has equaled and no photographer can hope to achieve.

Peterson is tops! Accept no substitutes!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but incomplete and becoming obsolete., 2 April 1999
By A Customer
Once considered the best of the North American field guides, this book is rapidly losing ground. With the impending release of the new National Geographic Society (NGS) field guide, Western Birds is showing its age. This book was last updated in 1990 and is missing many of the recent species splits, renames, and taxonomic changes. Its other major drawback is the many missing eastern vagrants included in guides like the NGS, which covers the entire continent north of Mexico. Carrying Western Birds instead of NGS during fall migration will leave the west coast birder at a disadvantage.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent field guide for hatchlings to old buzzards, 17 Mar 1999
By A Customer
This is an excellent reference and field guide for everyone from the begginner to the experience birder. I would recommend it to anyone who is into birding or is looking for the ideal gift for a birder they know. It's detailed diagrams and text, along with an easy to find format quickly made it a constant companion every time I step out the door.
