Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Vivien Alcock's brilliant psychological thriller for children is a tale told through the eyes of Kate Seton, a sensitive eleven-year-old from a wealthy Hampstead family. Kate is an ordinary, happy-go-lucky girl until she overhears her parents discussing their other baby daughter who was snatched from her pram as a baby. Kate's feelings are confused, cleft between jealousy at her parents' sadness and a genuine sense of loss on her own part. Then, one day, a letter arrives at the Seton's house announcing that the baby is Rosie, now a thirteen-year-old girl--and nothing can ever be the same again in the Seton household.

Rosie is from a very different background. Confused and angry about being led to this "posh" family, she denies she is the missing sister. Little by little, Vivien Alcock skilfully weaves the hidden strands of the plot together, allowing her characters to grow in understanding of themselves and others until the thrilling conclusion. This book is an absorbing, stylish read for more advanced readers, and a deserved runner-up in the Young Observer Award. (Ages 10 to 12) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review

Alcock's novels are admired here and in her native England for inventive plotting and crackling dialogue that individualize her unusual characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yorkie from Yorkshire, 3 Oct 2005
By A Customer
Excellent book - the best one written by Vivian Alcock, I think. I bought it after my daughter and I had watched the BBC series 'The Cuckoo Sister' on the television years ago. Shelley Measures was superb as Rosie and the casting of the other actors followed the book admirably. Wish the BBC would repeat it. I have tried to buy a DVD of it, to no avail. Produced by Paul Stone and directed by Marilyn Fox, this was a BBC classic. Please, BBC, do a re-run!

4.0 out of 5 stars Cuckootastic, 15 Dec 2006

This review is from: The Cuckoo Sister (Hardcover)
This is an excellent book. I ordered it and read it because I saw an extract in a drama duologues book and that left me wanting to know more. I am a drama teacher and this book is excellent for that rather strange pre-teen age group. The characters are deep, the plot is fast paced and there is some good dialogue. I enjoyed this book from beginning to end, and because I'm a little older than the target age it took just under an hour and a half to read from cover to cover. If you're a child, pick this book up - you'll love it. If you're an adult - pick this book up because you'll love it too. Then sheepishly give it to a suitably young relative!
