4.0 out of 5 stars A simple collection of carefully chosen words., 4 Dec 1999
By A Customer
Twenty years ago I became captivated. Dreaming of Babylon found me in a second hand book shop and ever since I have been a fan of Richard Brautigan's words. The great sadness is that because of Brautigan's success in the 1960's, he was later to become almost totally ignored, classified as a "hippie writer". "The Tokyo Montana Express" - his last book, just for it's sheer wit and carefully chosen words far exceeds anything you will find in the best seller lists today. Where as this collection certainly goes a little way towards showing a new generation his gentle humour and acute observation, it is sad that his most acomplished and mature book is totally ignored. The reason for this is probably because the original sales were low due to Brautigan being "gone out of fashion". "The Tokyo Montana Express" is the Brautigan book that everyone should read and the publishers of this collection should do everything they can to put it into print.

5.0 out of 5 stars Three of Richard's Best, 22 April 1999
By A Customer
When I first read Hawkline Monster, the first Brautigan novel I came across, I was taken aback. I'd never read anything as interesting as this tale of two professional killers hired to kill a supposed monster. I became a fan. Confederate General, however, became my favorite. Brautigan takes his readers into another world--goes beyond simple experience in chapters like Lee Melon performing his rights of tobacco at Big Sur. With Dreaming of Babylon--a unique mystery--this is one of the best Brautigan collections around.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and funny, 27 Feb 2008
By F. S. Harte "jcayyi" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
One of the qualities reviewers of Richard Brautigan's beautiful writings seldom mention is the humour. Dreaming of Babylon is possibly one of his funniest works, personfied in such characters as the hopeless day-dreaming detective and the lady who drinks huge amounts of beer without seeming to need the bathroom. Yet Brautigan's surreal wit is never contrived or knowingly clever - this is a warm giggling at the sheer daftness of life, a sensibility perhaps best described as Taoist.
