Excellently written. Great dialogue, adequate characterizations, but frankly, the motivations of some of the characters, particularly the alcoholic author, Trahearne, make little sense. Does he love his wife or doesn't he? Does he want her back or does he want her gone? In the end, the sad demise of the main character is totally gratuitous. She was already leaving and that was tragic enough.

There are only 5-10 books I rate 10 and this is one. Crumley's characters are real, not cardboard cutouts, they are rough hewn. The plot twists in this book are simply amazing. I was very angry at some of the characters at the end but, Crumley deals with that too. Simply outstanding!

The Last Good Kiss starts off slowly with a mildly interesting task for our hero, but soon the novel spills over into a booze-soaked road novel with intrigue, seduction and double-crosses. A must on any bookshelf.
