3.0 out of 5 stars For academic purposes I'd recommend a different edition, 8 Jul 2006

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
The review led me to believe that this edition of Spenser's works would contain helpful, extensive notes, but sadly it does nothing of the sort. The notes are very scanty and not very detailed, if you were reading Spenser for a dissertation (like I was), then you wouldn't find very much use in them - I'd recommend The Penguin Spenser or Longman Annotated editions instead, both of which have a very academic approach and provide a wealth of additional information. The Norton Spenser also includes a number of critical essays; unfortunately, however, most of them are abridged and not printed in their entirety. I give this 3 stars because it is decent enough for an introduction to Spenser but for more academic purposes I'd recommend another edition.
