Product Description

Review
"Exciting... a masterpiece!" Ted Turner "There is something wonderfully homely, reassuring and reasonable about Brown's radicalism. But in these dark and cynical days, radical it certainly remains." New Scientist"

Product Description
The world faces numerous environmental trends of disruption and decline such as rising temperatures, falling water tables and rising sea levels. In addition, the world faces the peaking of oil, the addition of 70 million people per year, a widening global economic divide and the spread of international terrorism. The global scale and growing complexity of issues facing our fast-forward world have no precedent. In "Plan B", Lester R. Brown highlights how in ignoring nature's deadlines for dealing with these issues we risk the disruption of economic progress.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saving our planet is not a spectator sport, 7 Nov 2006
Lester Brown is probably the most important voice of our time and the Earth Policy Institute are probably the most important group around today. Many are calling for Brown to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Brown manages to outline all the problems currently facing our planet in a readable and comprehensive way. While communicating the gravity of the problem, he manages to make you believe that you can do something about it, and more importantly WANT to do something about. Everyone should read this book before the damage becomes irreversible with increasingly tragic consequences. Saving our planet is not a spectator sport.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Problem, its causes and solutions for environmentalists and businessmen alike, 4 Jun 2007
By Sami Miettinen "Improver" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Lester R. Brown's book on global warming is superb because it goes beyond the usual doomsday predictions. It actually offers action points for saving the world.

Not a small task, but Brown succeeds admirably in describing how we can act now; Politicians can be influenced by persuading them to shift tax burden from personal taxation to environmental taxation, wind turbines can be built to gain extra income for land-owners. This solution oriented approach is convincing and works better than the typical condescending finger-pointing and blaming found in the genre.

The true gift of the book is that it teaches the megatrends of the planet under distress powerfully. Big themes such as shift of land use from food production to bioenergy, loss of water reserves, and other secondary impacts of global warming are illustrated with well-researched data and research.

The book does not have a preachy tone and is matter-of-fact. Because of this, Lester enjoys a credibility similar to Al Gore among business leaders. The book's Plan 2.0 can also be seen as a prediction for potential future business opportunities in emerging growth areas such as renewable energy equipment manufacturing, bioenergy investments and land value appreciation.

Plan 2.0 might just be the practical antidote for lessening the tragedies of global warming. "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail" might have never been more appropriate than in this issue.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing wallow in details of the problem, and no Plan B, 22 Jan 2009
By Jezza (London) - See all my reviews
Where's the plan? The author is on top of all the facts about the problems our civilisation faces, and has read all the right books - Diamond's Collapse, for example, which is infinitely better written and more interesting.

But it's poorly organised, and very weak on the remedies - whenever he starts he just goes back to more detail on the problems - apart from some commonplace stuff about hybrid cars, wind and solar. Not nearly enough analysis on what's really needed, how we get there or how much it will cost.

If you've been on a desert island for the past eight years read it, but otherwise don't bother.
