I cannot recommend this book highly enough, it can easily be compared to Voltaire's Candide, favourably. Vacillating between the profound and the profane I have rarely found a book so utterly satisfying - you will be loathe to part company with the incomparable Fanny by the end of the book. Buy this book and do yourself a good turn!

i am loath to give any book a perfect rating, but in this instance i cannot do otherwise.

erica jong's book is written with beautifully crafted prose that swings between poetry and bawdiness.

the story starts with an aristocratic lady whose adventures are about to begin - but you will have to read it to find out WHAT adventures.

many historical fiction books belie their origins in language peppered with accidental modern day moods, phrases and references. erica jong avoids this as much as is practically possible, while still delivering a book that is eminently readable and enjoyable.

i have read this book several times, and will continue to read it. it is my favourite book and i really hope you enjoy the adventures of the feisty heroine, fanny hackabout jones.
