5.0 out of 5 stars Revenge of the furry things, 18 Sep 2009

(REAL NAME)
We are not really permitted these days to empathise with animals - a new social Puritanism is alive and anthropomorphism is thought sentimental or philosophically unsound. Those of us who love animals have taken no notice of this selfish lack of imagination and continue to sympathise with the hard done to of any species. Patricia Highsmith has written a beautifully crafted set of tales with her usual macabre sense of the ridiculous. They are both funny and chilling and have a set sequence of events. An animal,or several animals in two cases, is subjected to mistreatment, cruelty or simple ignorance about their needs, and the animal retaliates with the result that somebody dies.

One's immediate sympathies lie with the animal, especially in the case of creatures such as battery chickens and farm animals. A goat, a horse, a pig, as well as the chickens, got my vote against the humans. Pets can have a hard time of it too. Hamsters, a dog and a cat all revenge themselves for miserable treatment. A cockroach, a rat and a ferret vanquish their enemies, and only in the case of the rat did I feel Ms Highsmith going beyond my level of tolerance. It doesn't do to be squeamish when reading anything by Patricia Highsmith, who goes as far as she is likes into the troubled psyche of the underdog; here, literally. I loved this outrageous and blackly humourous book and applaud the depth of imagination and creativity with which Highsmith sets forth her manifesto..
