5.0 out of 5 stars A little known gem, 11 April 2009
By Philip G. Griffiths "phelpe" (Newcastle, Tyne and Wear United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is a little gem which deserves to be much better known. I first read it when I was kayaking down the coast of Baja (a piddling little trip compared to Graham's) about 10 years ago.
I loved the book but wasn't sure whether it was purely the book itself or whether it was the relaxed and happy state I was in. Just like wine enjoyed abroad never tastes the same at home. I bought a new copy from Amazon recently and I enjoyed reading it, as much, if not more, on a cold rainy UK weekend.
Graham is not your Bear Grylls or Ranulph Fiennes type although I don't think he is quite the ordinary guy he pretends to be. His humanity shines through in the easy rapport he establishes with Mexicans in fish camps and his affection for these people is clear.
His account is well written especially for a first book and I found myself turning the pages to ensure he got to the end of his journey safely. By the time I finished the book I felt sad to be leaving an old friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book by a unspoiled, open and honest person., 30 May 1999
By A Customer
A wonderful book about Baja. Graham Mackintosh sees Baja and the Mexican people through fresh, open and appreciative eyes. His book tells as much about his character as that of the land he travels.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent adventure for Baja fans., 1 Sep 1998
By A Customer
This book totally captivated me. I was familiar with most of the areas traveled and found him to be right on target with his descriptions. I love Baja and enjoyed learning the experiences he encountered and how he tackled all the many hardships he faced.
