Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Anne Fine's Up On Cloud Nine is possibly one of the best books you will ever read. Character-led, beautifully crafted, uplifting and life-affirming, Fine's masterpiece tells the story of a deep friendship between two boys, Stolly and Ian. The pair are introduced to the reader at the point where the accident-prone Stolly is lying unconscious in a hospital bed having survived a rather spectacular plummet to the ground from a very high window.

As the pair are caught in the sterile time-warp of the hospital, waiting for the arrival of their respective parents, Ian contemplates Stolly's life: a Walter Mitty character who insists he is not a liar but a fantasist, who unflinchingly speaks as he finds and is blessed with a mind and imagination so receptive to experience that occasionally his words and actions are shocking to those around him.

As the waiting continues Ian, circled by a social worker who is concerned at the alarming regularity of Stolly's hospital visits, pieces together the good, the funny, the bad and the downright ugly, compiling a comprehensive biography that ultimately leads him to believe that his remarkable friend's accident may not have been an accident at all.

Anne Fine is certainly on form in this extraordinary, unforgettable novel--the lady rarely disappoints, with sure-fire winners such as Goggle Eyes, Flour Babies and Madame Doubtfire enticing new generations of readers into her world. But with Up On Cloud Nine she really hits the spot with a sublime, involving novel that is a deceptively quick and simple read, yet contains all the hallmarks of a classic work of fiction. It may sound overdramatic, but everyone--and that includes adults--should read this to remind themselves that a really good book can lift the spirits and leave you with seriously rosy glow. Age 9 and over. Susan Harrison --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shining Light on Dark Moments, 13 Jan 2002
This review is from: Up on Cloud Nine (Hardcover)
Yet again Anne Fine has written a story 'for children' that every caring parent, teacher - and in this novel - nurse, social worker and police-person - should also read.

We have accepted and applauded her ability to deal with divorce, sexism, death, abuse, ageism and neglect with penetrating perception and great humour. Now she delves even deeper and reaches into the insecurities of adoption and the psychology of [potential] suicide with a deftness and gentleness that are breathtaking.

As the mother of three adopted children, I, like Sue, Ian's adoptive Mother, wept, at the question "How often are you going to find a diamond among the dustbins?".[p.131] I found three - and shall give each of these exceptional adults a copy of Anne Fine's new novel.

As teachers, how often do we come across pupils who are seemingly 'too clever for their own good'? How often do we allow them the opportunity 'to spread [their] huge wide glowing wings' and share 'what you truly are inside'. [p.89/90]?

Stol [his own acronym and palindrome that invites completion...] is someone who will live in our lives along with Skellig and Lyra: characters who convince us that ordinary human beings have the capacity to become quite extraordinary.

Another amazing, life-enhancing book that should be on every available shelf-space.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stolly, Stolly, Stolly !!, 10 Jun 2005
This review is from: Up on Cloud Nine (Paperback)
Up on Cloud Nine is one of the few books I have read in which the main character utters only a few words! His name is Stolly and as he is lying unconscious in a hospital bed, his story has to be told by Ian, his best friend and protector. Stolly is the crazy one always up on Cloud Nine. Ian is the sensible one always bringing Stolly back to earth.

This is a touching and funny book that left me stunned by Stolly and Ian's mad life and mad parents. As it tackles several important teenage issues, I recommend parents and kids both read the book. You'll be comtemplating the Meaning of Life one minute and laughing your head off the next.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book should win the Carnegie Medal. Definitely., 6 May 2003
This review is from: Up on Cloud Nine (Paperback)
I admit I haven't read two of the nominated titles yet, but this is my favourite so far, and I think it will stay that way. I don't usually like Anne Fine's books (the exception being Flour Babies) but this one was brilliant, the sort of book that will stay with you for a long time. Stolly is the main character of this book, but it is narrated by his best friend Ian. In the book, Ian tells about all the memories he has of Stolly as Stolly lies in hospital following an unusual accident. Stolly is a very orginial, interesting character, and I find myself now I've finished the book imagining other things that he might get up to.

This book is very easy to read and humorous, but has its dark moments and is very thought-provoking. The sort of book that some people might dismiss as a children's book - I had to go hunting in the children's section of the library to find it, with everyone staring at me - but it isn't at all. I think this phrase is overused but this is actually the sort of book that can appeal to everybody.
