As ever, Flashman tells it as it was. The humour and transparency of these tales is always engaging, and Flashman in late middle age or even old age is as entertaining and honest a guide to the nineteenth century as ever. George MacDonald Fraser's writing never fails to be literate and intelligent, and never becomes pompous - as so many "serious" historical novelists are wont to do. May he continue to bring Flashy's memoirs to the public's attention!
