Product Description

Product Description

For as long as history has been recorded, girls haven't had much of a look in amongst all the great men we remember. But that doesn't mean they weren't there. And it doesn't mean that they didn't achieve great things, come up with wonderful inventions or win battles! Lots of people have heard of Joan of Arc, Boadicea and Florence Nightingale, but...Did you know that there were actually female Gladiators - Gladiatrices? Or that Nimkasi was the Sumerian Goddess of Beer? Or that it was Mary Jacob Phelps who invented the bra? In this book, Sandi Toksvig shows that His-tory is actually Her-story. Though they're often ignored or overlooked, they have changed the world. There's no question about it...Girls are best!

From the Back Cover

WHY IS IT HIS-STORY, NOT HER-STORY?
Girls have been around just as long as boys, haven't they? Yes! So why don't we hear more about great women from the past?

You might know of a few: JOAN OF ARC maybe, or BOADICEA or FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE, but . . . did you know there were female GLADIATORS called Gladiatrices? Or that Nimkasi was the Sumerian GODDESS OF BEER? Or that it was Mary Jacob Phelps who INVENTED THE BRA?

Just because we don't hear about them doesn't mean they haven't achieved AMAZING THINGS, come up with WONDERFUL INVENTIONS or WON BATTLES!

In this fascinating and witty book, jam-packed with storiesand information, best-selling author and TV personality Sandi Toksvig proves that girls can do anything boys can . . . and do it better!

A Kid's Review
I recieved this as a christmas present and was shocked at how good it was! did you know there were female gladiators called Gladiatrices?I certainly didn't!The reason I didn't give this book a 5 star rating was although it looked like a thick book from the outside,I would have liked a bit more information on the inside!Altogether a clever and funny book - thumbs up! (written by Blaise age 10)

I am usually a fan of Sandi Toksvig and find her very amusing but this book is simply aimed at filling the heads of young girls with feminist nonsense. Read more
