Product Description
Selina Penaluna is a merrymaid - or so she believes...Taken as a baby to the seashore, she slips from her mother's grasp and plunges deep into a rockpool. When her mother finally gets a hold of the slippery creature, she finds a mermaid child looking back at her - her baby taken and replaced by a mermaid changeling...Ellen and Jack are twins, evacuated from the East End of London to Cornwall during the Second World War. The family that takes them in are middle-class and a little stuffy but Ellen relishes the opportunity to better herself. But Jack is different. He finds their attentions stifling and seeks freedom in the arms of Selina, the mysterious local girl he sees at the shore. Selina, Ellen and Jack's lives are intertwined in a series of events that lead to tragedy. Could Selina have finally reverted to her merrymaid roots?

From the Inside Flap
Selina Penaluna is a merrymaid - or so she believes...

Dropped as a baby into a depp pool on the Cornish shore, she emerges a different child - a mermaid changeling - and is forever drawn to the sea. Abandoned by her mother, neglected and abused by her father, she desperately wants to escape her lonely life.

Ellen and Jack are twins, evacuated from East London to Cornwall at the start of the war. The family that takes them in are well-off and a little stuffy. Ellen relishes this opportunity to better herself, but Jack finds his new life stifling and seeks freedom in the arms of Selina, the mysterious fisherman's daughter whose wild beauty turns every man's head.

Selina's siren song has Jack captivated - but leaves his sister cold with jealousy. Can the young lovers find solace and build a new life together? And how will Ellen deal with being left behind?

A spellbinding, beautiful novel full of passion and tragedy, that will enchant older readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magic, mystery and mermaids, 20 Jun 2008

Buy this novel-the mythic story of a mermaid unfortunately marooned on dry land in Cornwall during the second world war-and you get at least four books for one: a history, a mystery, a pyschological thriller with an amazing twist in the mermaid's tail-and tale. And the fourth? Poetry. Beautifully written, with descriptions of the landscaope and insights into character that haunt as much as Selina Penaluna does.

5.0 out of 5 stars Selina Penaluna by Jan Page, 11 Jun 2009

This book although targeted at the younger reader is most suitable for all ages and will bring back many memories to people who were growing up in the war. It also gives the younger generation an idea of what their parents/grandparents were doing during the war years.
Very well researched as this centres on a very small village in Cornwall and what is written actually happened even down to some not very well known things.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wishes to know about the war years and wants a really good read

5.0 out of 5 stars Myth, mystery, tragedy and love, 12 Jul 2008

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I took SELINA PENALUNA on holiday with me to Cornwall - to read a book which is set in the place where you are and to hear the cry of the gulls as you read is magical, it really makes the story come alive. But you do not need to take this book away to experience the magic of the story, all you have to do is open the front cover.

SELINA PENALUNA is a book about twins, Jack and Ellen, who are evacuated from London to Cornwall during the Second World War. Although twins, they take to their new situation in very different ways - Ellen sees it as quite exciting; their new 'family' are farily wealthy and educated and so the world they inhabit is completely different to that she has known before. Jack, however, grows more and more disdainful towards the couple who have opened up their home to them. Desperately missing hiw own mother and father, he finds solace with a young girl, Selina. She is a girl who is quite unlike any other - she has long hair and an almost unnatural beauty. Jack becomes infatuated and it is this infatuation which slowly drives a wedge between him and Ellen.
But there is more to Selina than you would at first imagine. She is convinced that she is a mermaid changeling - that her mother was offered her when she lost her own baby on the beach. And she is certain that she will one day return to the sea.
Ellen instantly dislikes Selina - hating how she has taken her brother away from her and fiercely jealous of her beauty. Yet even she does not know just what damage their relationship will ultimately bring, not only to Jack but also to herself and others in the community.

That is a brief synopsis. There are many more details along the way, all of which go together to make for a beautiful and haunting novel. But do not be fooled by the subject matter of mermaids and communities by the sea - this is a story which has a double edge to it. Although it is beautiful there is also a darkness to this tale. Hardly any of the characters are all either 'good' or 'bad'. They are all complex with many sides to their personality - even Ellen who is the model daughter to her new family has sides to her which are not so benelovent.
This is a great story. Brilliant for older children or adults who still look to places like the sea and wonder about the origin of all that mythology.
