Product Description

Product Description
Barnaby Grimes is a tick-tock lad, running errands in his city, day and night, and 'high-stacking' around the rooftops in search of new mysteries to solve. In this first adventure, Barnaby is attacked one night by an enormous dog. He kills it - but that's not the end of this particular mystery ...as Barnaby finds himself swept up in a world of crooked doctors, poor and ill-advised patients, strange tonics and very expensive furs...Could there be more to the seemingly respectable Dr Cadwallader and the tonics he doles out to the poor? Is there a link between the tonic and the huge dogs - or possibly wolves - that are roaming the city at night? When Barnaby's old acquantaince Benjamin goes missing, Barnaby fears the worst for him, and decides to dig deeper...This features a fantastic romp through a Dickensian-style city, with a wonderful new hero in the guise of Barnaby. This new series from the bestselling dream team of Stewart and Riddell is a must for all fans of the "Edge Chronicles" - but also for fans of Horowitz and Shan, as they move into new territory and deliver a brilliantly exciting thriller-horror for boys.

From the Inside Flap
One moment I was standing there, sword raised, knees trembling. The next, in a blur of fur and fury, the hellish creature was flying towards me, its huge front paws extended and savage claws aiming straight at my hammering heart . . .

Barnaby Grimes is a tick-tock lad - he'll deliver any message anywhere any time. As fast as possible. Tick-tock - time is money! But strange things are afoot. One moonlit night, as Barnaby highstacks above the city leaping from roof to roof, gutter to gable, pillar to pediment, a huge beast attacks. He barely escapes with his life. And now his old friend Benjamin has disappeared . . .

A gloriously macabre tale in a breathtaking new series, packed with intrigu, horror and fantastic illustrations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for boys..., 10 Feb 2008
...I enjoyed this very much, as did my friend (also adult female). Very different to the futuristic/fantasy novels so popular today. Victorian London was not pleasant and is an ideal background to the mysterious adventures of the wonderful Barnaby Grimes. Hopefully this will encourage children to explore genuine Victorian literature.

Looking forward to the rest of the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars great, 5 April 2009

(REAL NAME)
This is one of the best books I have ever read it is a bit groosim in the first couple of pages but it was very well discibed, yet the whole book was very well discribed. The auther is very good at flowing the past to the present unlike other authers just say for example two weeks later...etc.
This is a great book and I highly recomend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars ENJOYED it, BUT DEFINATLEY NOT THERE YET. , 14 Feb 2009
firt thing is that i reilly enjoyed the edge Chronicles series, I thought it was vary creative, I though it was grenerly thought out pretty well,i reilly enjoyed the syk pirate. so I think that Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell have a lot more potential then there showing here, although i did enjoy the book. it's Honesty not the greatest book in the world, it's vary obvious in this book, what's going to happin at the end, and even more obvious who the bad guy is. but i will say that i enjoyed the part's in the book when Barnaby Grimes is highstacking a cross the city of london. and i did think that Paul Stewart's writing is a littly less detailed then i like. but at the same time i think that Paul Stewart's writing in the edge Chronicles is some time a little too detailed. so in some ways it was nice, not to have so many detailes. so I think that over all, it was a good book, just not a great book.

but I think that people who like the edge Chronicles books will most likely, like this books.
