5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful art, 15 Feb 2008

This is the most beautiful drawn story of the little mermaid .
Ian Beck has done a series of children's books but this one is his finest.
The illustrations are printed in high quality paper and the colours are very rich.

The book features some violence that might be upsetting for younger children ,so perhaps it might be a good idea for the parents to check it first.

5.0 out of 5 stars Aimed at the older reader, this bittersweet version of the tale from Ian Beck, 17 Nov 2008
By ABCeDar - See all my reviews

adapted from the original by Hans Christian Andersen.

From the back cover:-

..."The most beautiful of all the mermaids was the sea king's youngest daughter. She loved to hear the king's stories of the strange and distant world of humans above the sea"....'

Durable board covers open to 28 high quality shiny pages in the popular 2-page spread format.
Stunning illustrations throughout - Ian Beck at his very best.
Clear text.

Example of text:-

'Once, long ago, out where the ocean was at its deepest, and where the sea was as blue as crystal, there lived a great sea king. The king had six daughters, each a beautiful young mermaid. But the most beautiful of all was the king's youngest daughter. Her skin was as pale as the palest rose petals and her eyes were the colour of the ocean itself.

The youngest mermaid loved to hear the king's stories about the strange and distant world of humans above the sea. A world where people walked on legs. A world where you could smell the perfume of the flowers, and where the wind blew with a sigh through tall green trees.

When the little mermaid reached her fifteenth birthday, she was allowed to swim up to see the strange human world for herself. She swam all the way up to the surface of the sea.

For the very first time she was able to sit on a rock above the waves, and brush out her long hair in the warm wind........'

Life was so uncomplicated...... until the little mermaid falls in love....with a human, named Prince Caspar, and she takes some drastic action ....all for the sake of love!

OoOoo

(Possible SPOILER - this version does refer to a dagger, albeit unused as it turns out, but the content may not appeal to all.)
