Review
Praise for "Cradle Song":
"A rewarding experience . . . This is murder at its most foul, crime at the deep end."
--"Spectator"
"Cradle Song is a superbly paced book. . . . This is classic crime noir... Edric can also produce beautiful prose and arresting images as well as incisive social satire... Magnificently achieved."
--Giles Foden

"From the Trade Paperback edition."

Product Description
In the second volume of the Song Cycle trilogy, Hull private investigator Leo Rivers is approached by the mother of a girl who disappeared a year earlier in violent and mysterious circumstances. Investigating both the background to this disappearance, and the man held to be responsible, Rivers is drawn through a long, hot summer into a world of human-trafficking and Governmental corruption at every turn, each unravelled piece of the mystery moving him further from the vanished girl and deeper into a web of exploitation, greed, temptation, revenge and violence, from which even he is eventually unable to extricate himself without unforeseen and tragic consequences.

5.0 out of 5 stars Murder, human trafficking, sex and violence in Hull?, 16 Aug 2004
By ms L. Massey-Davis (Patrington, East Yorskshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I am a busy but educated mother of three mid-sized children. Accordingly I don't have nearly as much time to read as I would like. I follows that I am very selective about what books I read. I like an engaging plot and beautifully crafted words...I feel cheated if I get neither. In Edric, I get both!

If you are the same then your time will be well spent reading Siren Song (but read Cradle Song first). Leo Rivers is an engaging, realistic PI with a strong moral sense (if this isn't an oxmoron!). The plot has twists and turns, but is beautifully readable, even poetic in places. The pace is good and the ending could not be predicted until the final pages...

I can't wait to see it transformed into a TV play....if the people who talent spot these things have any sense that is..

2.0 out of 5 stars Rather dull and formulaic, 5 Aug 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Siren Song (Paperback)
This book came wrapped in plaudits which you had to wade through before even getting to the first chapter - not a great marketing tool for a package that isn't, I'm afraid, as good as its wrapping. Edric may have written lots of other wonderful stuff (I can't comment as I haven't read any others), but unfortunately Siren Song is too formulaic and very slow. I think it would be better if the characters were shown as more than mouthpieces for the plot and if we could just see even a glimpse of their non-plot or emotional lives - please! However, the novel is thick with conversations telling us what is happening and talking about the plot - which is rather dull. The one action scene was such a relief when it arrived - but too late and too short. As a result I liked none of the characters and was deeply confused about the relationships between them - eg who on earth is Yvonne with and why? And what possible attraction does Louise have for Leo?? It is indeed a mystery.

In short what it so desperately needed was less plot, more direct action and - please!! - less talking. Not one I'd recommend, I'm afraid - but as the sparkling reviews keep on (and on) telling us, perhaps the author's other works are better?
