5.0 out of 5 stars Inside saga of Bear Stearns's dazzling rise and dramatic, abrupt decline, 19 Aug 2009
By Rolf Dobelli "getAbstract.com" (Switzerland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
The 2008 collapse of leading Wall Street investment house Bear Stearns showed the world just how rickety the global financial system had become. William D. Cohan tracks the firm's dizzying rise and rapid collapse. His access to Bear Stearns insiders is the book's strongest point. He offers a trenchant analysis of its decades-long rise and a definitive account of its final days. Cohan paints textured portraits of Bear's top people, though he isn't especially interested in translating their Wall Street jargon for lay readers. He lets his sources speak in their own patois. getAbstract recommends this book to business history buffs, investors and managers seeking perspective on a spectacular failure.

2.0 out of 5 stars Only works on MP3 configured DVD/CD players, 7 Jun 2009
It is disappointing that this product only works on CD/DVD players that are configured to play MP3 CDs. On the plus side this does make it easier to have the book in unabridged format on CD which is a big plus. As I am reviewing the CD product I have marked the star rating low due to the serious limitation on being able to use it.

The book itself however is good (as the reviews of the traditional format of this book will no doubt testify) and were I reviewing that alone I would have given it 4 stars.

It is based on the testimony of many of the key players involved which gives you a sense of intimacy with what took place particularly in the key periods surrounding the demise of Bear Stearns. At the same time however the rather basic vocabulary that these individuals appear to have used does tend to dumb down the account slightly - this is no great piece of literature and no academic text. It is not therefore the most intellectual absorbing piece but at the same time it does avoid being indigestible which some finance related texts tend to be - I enjoyed listening to it. In fact I would have liked to hear more - particularly a more detailed account of the Lehman's collapse which receives rather cursory coverage at the end of the book - despite itself arguably being of rather greater moment then Bears purchase by JP Morgan.
