1.0 out of 5 stars Frustrated from Somerset, 18 Nov 2007
By Mrs. A. M. J. Wigmore "The Parsnip" (Somerset UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The subject is attractive. Alas, I found a few nice bits to ponder, but the book is unnecessarily dense, and somehow hard work. `Difficult' is not the same as `deep'! As in so many potentially exciting books, flow and clarity are spoiled by what feels like an effort to bump up the page count.
He has some good definitions:
"Authentic morality is the child of understanding."
"Freedom is the study of slavery. Happiness is the study of sorrow and false pleasure".
But few came as simply put as those.
Are there any pearls worth searching for? Having bought it I struggled on, but growing irritation with Needleman's inability to just give us the stuff plainly, caused me to give up before the end.
Some are bound to be impressed by his erudition.
