4.0 out of 5 stars This is an enthralling and unique book., 17 Dec 1999

This review is from: The Furies (Hardcover)
This book is extremely well written and is made fascinating by its (I think) autobiographical nature. Reading it puts one in mind of a day spent in a friend's living room listening intently to her recounting her life from early childhood and trying to make sense of the traumas, privations and tormented relationships. The characters of the protagonist Helen's mother and grandmother are brilliantly drawn and the descriptions of school life and eventual reunion with her father in England are full of humour as well as tragedy. As Helen gets older, goes to Oxford and marries a rich and talented man, our interest in the character could disappear. In one sense she is just another talented but flaky New Yorker spending her life in therapy. However the knowledge of Janet Hobhouse's own battles with mental illness and early death from cancer sustain our sympathy to the end and make us wish that she had lived to write more novels.
