5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect rainy day book, 30 May 1998
By A Customer
I first read this book as part of an anthropology course in 1969. Since then I have read it at least once each year. Its insights into human nature and the commonalities found in all cultures are exceptional. It is easy to read and a joy to come back to again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for budding anthropologists, 3 April 2006
Do not be put off by this book's vintage: Smith Bowen's tale of anthropological fieldwork in West Africa tackles many of the most daunting challenges of research in faraway places in an unusually candid fashion. Unencumbered by concerns about political correctness and postmodernity, the author provides a rare insight into the personal experiences (both good and bad) of being in the field and, in doing so, covers the kind of ground that most research training overlooks. Funny and moving, with vivid descriptions and an engaging narrative, this book is a definite must for all aspiring anthropologists (and students of development).
