The story is mainly located in a space-station above Marak's planet. Here Procyon acts as an 'interface' between Marak on the planet and the political factions on the station. The characters are well drawn as is usual for Cherryh, but the style of the story is changed from Hammerfall. It reads very like some of the stories in the Foreigner series - the same ideas of factions, spacestation, planet and an 'iterface' in trouble just transposed to Marak's world. This is disappointing, it no longer has the feel of a new series.

From a slow start, when I only read a few pages at a time and felt rather 'couldn't care less' about what might happen, I was gradually drawn in to the world of the station, the planet below, and the all-too-human machinations going on above and below. All the characters were beautifully drawn, and by the end of it, I really wanted the story to continue and to stay with Procyon in his new circumstances and find out 'what happened next'. Hopefully it won't be too long before the next book is written which will tell us just that.
