1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, 26 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Regular fans of SEP's books or in fact, anyone, should definitely give this a miss. A cliched "historical" novel that would have been much better left out of print, it's unbelievable both in plot and characters and doesn't compare to her later modern romances. I bought this as I was interested to read the first book by SEP but wish I hadn't bothered. It doesn't have any of the energy or character interest her later books have so much of.

5.0 out of 5 stars Suspend some disbelief and it's brilliant!, 12 Oct 2008
Okay, if you're familiar with SEP's later work it doesn't matter one bit. I read all her other books first before reading this one - despite the bad reviews - and came to it with a critical eye because of said reviews. I do happen to like historical romances so if you're the type to prefer modern day then this might not be for you. The plot is a little kooky but things like how Cain and Kit met may have actually happened back then. If you do not know the plot it goes a little something like this: Cain gets control of Risen Glory, Kit's home, through his mother who married Kit's father, and she, still being eighteen, impetuous and smarting after the war, sets off to the city to kill him so the property reverts to her. Of course things don't go to plan...

To be perfectly honest some of SEPs earlier plots have been called into question as being too "out there" and "unrealistic" and I find that silly. it's fiction! And things like this or the plot in Kiss an Angel might actually happen anyway so there is no point in saying things like the plot is unrealistic. So, suspend some disbelief...

The technical brilliance of SEPs writing is there, a little unvarnished maybe and possibly not as hilarious as her later work, which is set in modern day and therefore can afford to make more sexual innuendos and more fun of people, but it is still funny, still heartrending and still amazingly brilliant. It will go as a keeper on my shelf. Cain is a complex character, reading about him is like a rollercoaster ride, bringing you up with hope before tearing you down with despair. Kit is the future woman, a woman with spirit and recklessness, who isn't afraid to speak her mind, gallop as fast as she can on the most dangerous of horses and who will defend the underdog with everything she has. Together they are like dynamite, one look, one touch, one kiss and hang on for dear life as we get to the inevitable conclusion. For what happens when gunpowder and a match that's lit meet? They burn....

4.0 out of 5 stars A historical romance from SEP., 12 Nov 2002
Well to be frank... this isn't the best SEP book I've ever read. But I didn't expect it to be either. This was the first book that she got published, and you can tell. But at the same time it is a book that is good, if I hadn't read any of her other books on beforehand it would've been great. It has humour, a strong-willed heroine and a strong-willed hero. And when the hero gets the cotton farm that the heroine ought to inherit from her father, well... she just has to go to New York and kill him. It's good for a first book. But don't get your hopes up if you've read all her other books. It's rawer. Nevertheless... enjoy.

I was so disappointed by this book. I love the author's contemporary books and I normally enjoy historical romances but I absolutely hated this - didn't like the characters or... Read more
