4.0 out of 5 stars A witty and humorous battle of the sexes, 29 April 2003

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
"The Wedding Bargain" is an entertaining historical romance set in Regency England.Lady Pandora Effington is the ton's most scandalous unmarried young beauty with dozens of broken hearts in her wake. She is too spoilt and independent and she wants to marry only if a special hero comes along who would do anything for her love. Maximillian Wells, the Earl of Trent is a dashing red-blooded aristocrat who decides that the beautiful passionate Pandora with her delectable body is just the woman he wants to make his wife. He thinks he is irresistible and challenges Pandora to give him a test to prove her his worth. Pandora is attracted to the handsome rake but she is a proud woman and she doesn't want to become his trophy. She gives him a ridiculous test, a test which a mortal man wouldn't survive "The twelve labours of Hercules".Max is shocked by the test but he is just as head-strong and proud as Pandora and he vows to win. Their battle of the sexes is brilliantly delivered and delightfully shown by the author. Max and Pandora are two intelligent, witty. stubborn and very self-possessed people. They passionately fight for every little step in their scandalous game, which of course is in the centre of attention of the gossiping ton. The behaviour of Pandora's extended family and their mutual friends is humorous and entertaining. Max's efforts for winning the wager are clever, funny and vastly ridiculous. Their encounters happen in the most unbelievable places and they keep the reader captivated by their antics. I enjoyed the style, in which the author makes the leading couple fall in love. It happens suddenly when they least except it and in a simple manner.
THE WEDDING BARGAIN is a lighthearted Regency romp vastly entertaining the audience with its fast-paced storyline, witty dialogues and passionate battle of the sexes. I recommend it to historical romance readers who like to escape from their daily routine with an undemanding book.

1.0 out of 5 stars A great disappointing, 14 May 2002
The first book that I read of Victoria Alexander was "The Prince' s Bride", and it was very funny, so I try another of her books. But "The Wedding Bargain" was a total disappointing, and soooo boring! I don't belive a female like Pandora in this period. Nobody can break so many rules of this stric society and be respectable, although her grandfather was a duque. And calling her parents by their given name, for God's sake!! I know the Regency in romantic books is a bit... fantastic, but in my opinion, at least should be credible.
And I do not have words to speak of the main theme, the 12 labors of Hercules... Brrrrrrr....
Try another book.
