3.0 out of 5 stars Could you kill her off please, maybe?, 20 Jul 2001
Gardner's fourth novel is the third where Fiesta Ramos plays a key role, and quite frankly, she's giving the books a feeling of uniformity that is dissapointing. On its own, this book is enjoyable if straightforward space-opera, but from the moment Ramos appears (about half way through) the book begins to feel like a rewrite of Expendable.

Personally, I feel that this serialization detracts from origionality as the characters gather enough "experience" for them to become predictable--when they can't do anything new because it would be out of character. Then it starts to feel like something set in the Star Trek/Wars universes, where the authors have to read the series "bible" and match character actions to it. This is not a place where quality SF should go--and is quite a dissapointment after his first two books. Though some people like this, I suppose.

And I hear that his next book will have the character Glass, from Expendable in it (didn't she die?). Oh well.

4.0 out of 5 stars High-pitch action guided by intelligence, 13 Aug 2007
This is the fourth in Gardners League of Worlds novels. The protagonists of this novel are Oar, who with assistance recovered from the mortal injuries she suffered in 'Expendable,' and Edward York, the less-than-intelligent son of of an Admiral. The intelligence and maturity of each protagonist change greatly during the course of this book which centres on the themes of coming of age, and fulfilling the responsibilities of power.

Gardner also explores the military's role in society, and the notion of expedient means. The adroit use of several mirror-image characters allows the astute reader to spot some interesting ideas on human nature while enjoying the rollicking plot. This is a good fun read with quite a lot of depth there if you look for it.
