4.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining Regency romance, 28 Feb 2003
By "ambersaxon696" - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
"Taming Rafe" is a lighthearted and humorous historical romance set in Regency England. Rafael Michelangelo Bancroft wins Forton Hall from Nigel Harrington in a card game. Rafe a handsome and charming rake decides to visit his newly acquired estate to survey and sell it as soon as possible in order to obtain funds for his travels abroad. He is a notorious adventurer who never settles down and who dreams of China as his next destination. He receives the biggest shock of his life when he arrives in Forton Hall and finds the place not only with a collapsed roof in a highly dilapidated state but also inhabited by the two Harrington sisters.Felicity Harrington a young lady full of practical sense tries her best to look after her sister May and survive their straitened circumstances without servants and help.
She is strong but desperate and obviously not pleased by Rafe's claim of ownership. They fight from the first moment they meet and decide to wait for Nigel's arrival to prove Rafe's rights to the estate.Rafe is attracted to Felicity and she intrigues him immensely. He always knew how to handle women but Felicity outmanoeuvers him all the time. Of course he doesn't intend to stay any longer at the hall than necessary but he starts planning repairs to make the property sell better. Felicity is full of suspicions for him but she is not immune to his charms. She has never met such an irresistible man like him before. The air is sparkling between them and their attraction grows from day to day.Felicity is struggling with her love for her ancestral home and with her longing for Rafe, an unattainable adventurer who will leave her behind.Rafe's inner turmoil is no less bigger. He doesn't understand his own behaviour. He wants to set off for China and woe Felicity at the same time. The book is full of funny situations and sensual encounters. The leading protagonists are a likeable pair although I found Felicity's circumstances and the villagers' negligence for propriety slightly unbelieveable for the Regency period. However Rafe's process of maturity adds to the charm of his character.
TAMING RAFE is a typical Regency romp without any serious insights written in a humorous style and with the ultimate aim to entertain until the last page.I am positive historical romance readers preferring the lighthearted version of the
sub-genre will enjoy this enjoyable piece of work.

3.0 out of 5 stars good, but boring at times, 2 Sep 1999
By A Customer
When my language arts teacher recommended Suzannne Enoch to me as a romance author, I immediately ran to the bookstore to buy her books. I read By Love Undone first and I loved it, so I eagerly picked up Taming Rafe right afterwards. I loved the character of Rafe, who is still the embodiment of the perfect rake for me. He's so charming, noble, caring, funny, and charismatic that I just fell in love with him. However, in my opinion, the plot was boring and I got tired of the storyline pretty quickly. Even Rafe couldn't speed it along. The characters are quite lovable, including little May and Beeks, the butler. But the heroine, Felicity, didn't appeal to me all that much, perhaps because the story centered around Rafe so much. All in all, the book had great characters, but the plot just plain bored me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great fun - don't be put off by the reviews, 4 Feb 2000
By A Customer
If you enjoy Julia Quinn and Catherine Coulter then do give this book a try. It is great fun. Sure there are no serious insights but that's not the point. A light silly romp which you will read in one sitting grinning the whole while.
