5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever, 13 Feb 1999
By A Customer
This book has got to be one of the best books I've ever read. I had gotten it from the library, but after I read it I went out and bought a copy of the hardcover because I knew it was one of those books that I'd read over and over again. The story is richly entertaining, and the information is wonderful, you can tell that EL really did alot of research for this one, I loved Amber Beach but Jad Island really takes the cake, I can't wait for the next one (hopefully it's going to be about Archer) I love the whole plot and theme of the story, a previous reviewer said that all the Jade information was boring but it's not true because it brings out the plot and makes the novel seem more exotic. Those people who skips over those parts might as well just not read the book. But all in all this is a wonderful book, and I'm checking almost every week just to see if the new one came out yet. Read the book, you won't be disappointed!!

3.0 out of 5 stars More Romance Less Jade, 28 Nov 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Jade Island (Hardcover)
I love Elizabeth Lowell's books. This book was good but needed more romance, and YES, more family, and less jade. I actually thought about counting all the times the word "jade" appeared, but alas, I don't have 5 hours of spare time. A previous reviewer mentioned that this book was like "Tell Me No Lies" and it was. All one had to do was substitute "jade" for "bronze statues" and the stories were very nearly identical. My eyes actually began to skim over the jade, jade color, serpentine versus nephrophite, erotic jade sculptures, jade burial suits, jade trade...ad nauseam, discussions.

This book was definitely better than Amber Beach and had more conversation and less of those constant witty rejoinders, that characterized the dialogue in the first novel in the trilogy. It needed more plot (unrelated to jade) and romance development. It was good but not EL great. This series has been touted as a trilogy. I wonder who will be featured in the third? Definitely Archer but what about little sister, Faith? Or even Walker, the pilot? Whatever my complaints, this novel is probably greater than 50-75 percent of those out there. EL knows how to create a characters that have style and confidence in their abilities. I can't wait to read the next one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Much better than the first one!, 13 Aug 1999
By A Customer
the characters were more alive and the plot was more suspensful and believable. lowell has given the stone of jade a very passionate nature. i thouroughly enjoyed the extra characters in this book and the subtle introduction of the rest of the family and the reminders of the last book. the reason for only 4 stars was that i thought that some of the "language" used was not necessary. i can't wait to discover archer's match in the third book!
