4.0 out of 5 stars Good mix of authentic history and sizzling passion, 27 April 1999
By A Customer
Loretta Chase has done her homework very well. The reviewer who commented on the awful editing was missing Chase's references to Beowulf - Grendel is the (female) monster who makes the hero's life tricky - and the reference to Sarah Siddons was to the famous British actress of the 18th century. Can't fault those. But to the point - this was a non-stop, all-out romp, fun, witty and well-researched. It was my first Loretta Chase, but definitely not my last. If you like feisty heroines and mixed up heroes, this is one for you. It is sensual but the sex doesn't seem perfunctory and the best thing about it is the clear line that Chase develops to explain how a heroine who starts out loathing the hero can eventually end up with him. Nice work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good story, a little wordy, 16 May 1999
By A Customer
This was my first book that I've read by Loretta Chase. That Last Hellion was the sequel to Lord of Scoundrels.

Twenty-eight year old Lydia Grenville was perfectly happy living her life as a journalist and trying to help the prositutes and women on the streets. Then one day she meets her match, the notorious Duke of Ainswood, the last hellion of the Mallory clan.

Although Lydia and Vere cannot control the attraction they have for eachother, both try to deny it. Vere shows up where Lydia is and ruins her plans for a story, he follows her around, tries to seduce her. When he finds he cannot seduce her he offers marriage. She refuses, but both their tempers get in the way when she agrees to a race, if she loses she must marry the duke. She doesn't lose, but the duke is hurt and Lydia realizes she cannot live without him and agrees to marry him. The two marry, still argue all the time, Lydia writes books and they realize they are in love.

This book was pretty good, but found it to be (although very funny at times) a little wordy and my attention span was lost a few times. If not for that, I may have rated it a little better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, 17 April 1999
By A Customer
It's a wonderful, wonderful book. I laughed. I cried (a bit). I grinned. *A lot*. I truly loved Grendell (Lydia) and Vere. In this book, they are truly equal. All secondary characters are wonderful too - particularly Jessica Trent's nice-but-dim-but-not-*that*-dim brother, Bertie.

The Last Hellion is definitely a 'No-way-would-I-lend-this-book-to-you-not-even-for-a-years-worth-of-chocolate-boxes' book.

Finn
