Dark forces threaten Europe, creeping into the mundane world from the wider world of the Spiral. Steven Fisher, successful businessman and Spiral adventurer, is becoming increasingly torn between the two worlds he inhabits. As Europe descends into violence and unrest, Steve is tricked by the sorcerer Le Stryge into removing the continent's most powerful defence.

Like the first two books in this loose trilogy this is a highly enjoyable story. Well written, fast moving, with good characters and situations. The books expands on the central, fantastic idea of the series, The Great Spiral; the wider, more magical world which surrounds, influences and is influenced by our own.

This book does lack much of the sense of wonder, of infinite horizons that made "Chase the Morning" such a satisfying read. The characters who appear from the original, like Mad Mall, Jype the Pilot and Le Stryge, have a weaker portrayal here, but this maybe just be a reflection of the fact that Steve Fisher has grown as a person in the course of the books.

Though this book can stand alone, I would recomend reading "Chare the Morning" first.
