Robert Barnard, currently lives with his wife in Yorkshire. He was born in Essex on 23 November, 1936. Educated at the Royal Grammar School in Colchester and at Balliol College, Oxford, taking his Ph.D. from the University of Bergen, Norway, in 1972, he spent many years as a distinguished academic while establishing himself as one of today's most distinguished crime writers. His fascination with the pure detective story is evident in his many novels.

This book and most of the others I have read by Robert Barnard is a detective story in the true sense of the world, i.e. detection. No going in with all guns blazing or calling in the FBI etc. just a man using his brain power. The plot of this novel revolves around a double killing that happened many years ago.

Yorkshire writer Joshua Sneddon for whatever reason, maybe jealousy, who knows , took an axe and brutally killed his more successful sister. Having completed the killing he took a gun and shot himself in the head. Now all these years later an entrepreneur has suddenly started raking up information on the Sneddons, a pair who never really set the literary world alight. Detective Charlie Peace begins to wonder why . . .
