5.0 out of 5 stars The Tale Goes On..., 1 Dec 2008
By Fair Comment (Great Britain) - See all my reviews
This book takes up the story some eight years after the end of 'Sherwood', with Robin and Marion raising a family during a period of relative peace at Denby. However, a ruthless new character begins to make his presence felt - Chancellor Ranulph of Bayeux. Robin's people come under increasing pressure from this man, and Robin's subsequent proposal that the king be legally bound to treat his subjects fairly leads to him being exiled to Normandy. There the king uses Robin's skills in a war against France, and after the death of the Conqueror he is brought back to England by William's successor. Robin develops a sort of friendship with the new king, but trouble brews when the monarch states an intention to strip the churches of their valuables.
Those who enjoyed Godwin's 'Sherwood' will find similar pleasure in this sequel. It has the same rich descriptiveness and narrative, developing the characters further and introducing new ones. It's really just more of what Godwin's fans have come to expect - superb writing and storytelling that bring history to life.
