Product Description

Review
"A heartwarming book full of tenderness."-- "Library Journal""Hayden is a fine storyteller, recounting the touching bonds that form among the children and between Hayden and her students."-- "The Washington Post"

Product Description
They were all "just somebody else's kids" - four problem children placed in Torey Hayden's class because nobody knew what else to do with them. They were a motley group of children in great pain: a small boy who echoed other people's words and repeated weather forecasts; a beautiful seven-year old girl brain damaged by savage parental beatings; an angry and violent ten-year-old who had watched his stepmother murder his father; a shy twelve year old who had been cast out of Catholic school when she became pregnant. But they shared one thing in common: a remarkable teacher who would never stop caring - and who would share with them the love and understanding they had never known to help them become a family.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Page Turner!, 3 Aug 1999
By A Customer
This novel is a great novel for anyone interested in working with troubled children. Torey tells a story about her life as a resource teacher in one calender year. It is easy to read, written almost like a diary. It will captivate your interest and you will want to continue reading till the end. When I read this novel, I laughed and I cried. Each event that happens in this novel has you glued to your chair spellbound. Torey tells the story in such a realistic way that it will make you happy, sad, and sometimes angry. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who has or is working with a troubled child.

5.0 out of 5 stars An honest and moving story, 25 Oct 2005
By Mrs. J. E. Gray "Jennifer Gray" (Birmingham, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book concerns 4 children, each with their separate issues who are brought together under the care of a loving teacher for a period of time in which each child faces their fears in one way or another.

One girl cannot read due to severe beatings by her father which left her with brain damage, and at times during the book, I wanted a miracle to appear on the pages, I wanted to read that her disability had been overcome, (it never did) yet that was the beauty of the book in a way, it was honest and real, and if there had been a magical answer to everything I as the reader would not have experienced such raw emotions. I found the part where Boo is in hospital particularly harrowing.(I have purposely left out the details so as not to spoil it for someone who had not read the book)

At the end of the book I pondered the outcome for a while. It made me appreciate that we are not one life, but several, because whatever happens to each one of us; Loris inability to read, or Boo's autism as examples, affects so many people in the life around us.

It is a heartwarming book and well worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC Reading!, 1 Jul 1999
By A Customer
This is the first of Torey Hayden's books I read, and I doubt it will be the last! Her insights into the troubled minds of her students is nothing less than inspiring, and her ability to adapt to situations is equally so! I particularly enjoyed the flow of the story, as each child was entered into her class; the adaptations that she made, and the means that she used in spite of the "system", to bring each child in to the group. The only point that gives me pause, and makes me think, is the struggles she has when faced with problems. Any educator, no matter how outstanding, can only do so much. It is sad to see, and hard to realize for many, that there are just some children that we cannot "save" from society. My own hope: That when I begin teaching; that I can adapt as quickly, and reach the successes portrayed in this book. I recommend it to anyone; educator, parent, or anyone interested in children. It's a MUST read!
