5.0 out of 5 stars Superb read, hilariously honest, 20 Mar 2002
By Wilhelm Snyman "Wilhelm Snyman" (Cape Town, W Cape South Africa) - See all my reviews
While there is much sadness and tragedy in this superb book, it is tempered by a tremendous sense of humour, economy of style, subtle and pithy in its observations. Buy this book, you can't go wrong even if you've never lived in Africa. This is one of the most intelligent and readable books to deal with the "white" experience in Africa. Fuller pulls no punches and doesn't torture the reader with cringing political correctness or banal reactionariness. She evokes an era and a mentality while telling a very heartfelt story. Virginia Woolf would have envied Fuller's remarkably intuitive mastery of language.

4.0 out of 5 stars Impressive story of African childhood, 15 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Alexandra Fuller has written a wonderful book about her childhood in Africa. It's fascinating, sometimes funny, but also sad. It's a valuable book for people who want to know more about the history of Zimbabwe/Rhodesia. It paints a picture of the life of the white farmers as well as that of the black population. I liked Fullers style, it's very straightforward. The only thing I missed about the book is a kind of plot, but on the other hand, a plot is not really necessary as it is just the story of her childhood.
