5.0 out of 5 stars Jan Karon has done it again, I just had to read it all., 23 Jan 2002
By A Customer
For those who have been following the story of Father Tim through the other books in the series this fills in the gaps and rounds off the plot.
Father Tim is not only a gentle man but a lovable, honest man full of life and the insecurities that go with it. A new side of his character is explored and makes him even more human.
Cynthia also comes out more and her character is explored in new ways. The doubts and insecurities that have for so long plagued Father Tim seem to hit her now.
This is a love story as it should be portrayed. The feelings engendered are enough to open the heart of anyone who takes the time to read and try to understand how pure love can affect the lives of those who experience it.
The other characters are just as real as ever and contribute their own presence to the tale. From the cake to the flowers and the ceremony itself all goes in its own inimitable Mitford way.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, 18 Jun 2001
By A Customer
I loved all the other Mitford books and was so excited when I saw a new title, that I bought the book instantly. However I was very disappointed, the book focuses exclusively on Father Tim's wedding, which is strange as in the last book he was already married!? The content is light as some of the details have already been revealed in other books. All in all I felt disappointed and a little misled. I had expected it to carry on from the last book - instead it felt like a re-work of existing material rather than adding something to the Mitford stories.

3.0 out of 5 stars I want more!, 8 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Once I discovered Jan Karon's engaging & uplifting Mitford series I immediately devoured all six books in just a short period, relishing the anecdotes of Father Tim Kavanaugh & his faith-filled community.

Here in A Common Life are the long-awaited answers to these deeply probing questions: Will Father Tim fall apart when he takes his vows? Will Cynthia make it to the church on time? Who'll arrange the flowers & bake the wedding cake? And will Uncle Billy's prayers for a great joke be answered in time for the reception?

Reading A Common Life is somewhat akin to enjoying a flashback episode of a favorite television series. While the story is enjoyable, I was left wanting. My only wish is that Jan Karon will continue forward with the Mitford series & the tales of Tim & Cynthia & their extended family.
