Synopsis

4.0 out of 5 stars Hard Life for a Rough Boy, 30 Dec 2009
By Andrew J. Williams "Paul Ramone" (Portsmouth, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Not a Jim Thompson thriller but his autobiography. Not a life story as such, but a detailing of his working life, skipping the boring bits and plunging into the more extraordinary stints of employment. Thompson is a natural storyteller, as his prolific output of novels attests, and it is tempting to believe that he has exaggerated some of the events related here; several of the characters he encounters are tailor made for his novels. His outrageous bad luck, including depression-era near-starvation, buying a house built on a gigantic centipede nest and surviving a leap from a speeding train with only cuts and bruises, seem to support my hunch that he couldn't resist telling a tall story. However, the book covers three decades and if he concertina'd the highlights (and lowest points) into three hundred pages, it is possible it would read like this. Despite my scepticism, I admit it sounds convincing and it is certainly entertaining.
