Product Description

Independent on Sunday

Beautifully written - the work of an extraordinary mind, one that is worth exploring from every angle --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Product Description

Italo Calvino once said that he preferred to give false details about his biography since he felt that even the genuine data of a writer's life shed no light on the creative work. But this volume of posthumously collected personal writings is the closest we will ever come to the autobiography of this most private of writers. The pieces collected here from the early 1950s to his last interview, completed just before his sudden death in 1985. Apart from shedding light on his own formative experiences and evolution as an author, Calvino's autobiographical writings also examine the major events of twentieth century history from a very personal viewpoint. This volume is, as ever, full of ideas on literature and other writers, all conveyed with the author's distinctive lightness and intelligence. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Real Calvino, 1 Sep 2006
By Robert D. Lee (Enlgland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Oh Dear! The photograph on the front cover sums up the book perfectly. Smug, sneering, conceited and cold. Had I nor read his fictional works and enjoyed them I would not have read this book. His snobbishness is outstanding. Given that he likes to proclaim his allegiances to the political left this book says otherwise. He is more at home with the bourgeoisie of New York than he is the humble factory worker in Chicago.

The book tells you little of Calvino - everthing has to be extrapolated from his writings and opinions. He likes to 'drop names' as if they are going out of fashion.

Given that he is an educated man, he shows little understanding of American history and peppers the pages with what would now be seen as condescending racist comments.

I find it sad that a man whose work I admired seems very different in his personal writings. Now I understand why there is no real biographical account of his life - it would be truly nauseous to read.
