5.0 out of 5 stars The private lives of wives and mothers, 3 Nov 2006
This review is from: Arlington Park (Hardcover)
This is the first book of Rachel Cusk's that I have read, and I was drawn to it by the national press reviews. Cusk explores familiar territory - the quiet desperation of the lives of a set of 30-something middle class wives and mothers, but manages to make something fresh out of it, with a background of tension from environmental concerns impacting on the domestic, social and philosophical concerns of her characters. And her characters live, especially the obtuse but positive (and unintentionally hilarious) Christine and her drink-guzzling mother. No answers given other than 'get on with it', but lots of food for thought, humour, profundity and some great writing. Despite rarely finding much to enjoy in this genre of fiction these days (being 20 years too old!)I loved it and read it in a sitting.
