5.0 out of 5 stars Unputdownable!, 4 Aug 2006
By Bookworm (Scotland UK) - See all my reviews
I really enjoyed this and am eagerly awiting the next installment! Camille has a respectable job working with Egyptian artifacts in a museum. Her guardian however, always has some sort of plan for advancement, none of which can be deemed honest or respectable. When he is caught trying to break into Carlyle Castle Camille bravely cronfronts the 'Beast of Carlyle' in his castle, a man hidden behind a mask and under a curse. The Earl of Carlyle has hidden in the castle since his return from battle, convinced that his parents were not victims of an accident whilst on a dig in Egypt but were actually murdered.
When Camille stumbles into his life he decides there may be a way to find out. After all, she works with all the remaining persons from the ill fated dig. Is one of them a murderer? If so which one? Camille of course has every objection to being used and wants to know not only what he is up to but what is so awful it must be kept hidden day and night behind a mask.
With no one trusing anyone and the author skilfully making you suspect everyone, this was unputdownable. I usually prefer the Regency period or ealier so do not usually read stories from the Victorian era but I thoroughly enjoyed this and can't wait for the next one to arrive.
