Product Description

Product Description
When young magazine journalist Ashley Reeves receives an intriguing letter, he leaves his London office in the hope of reporting on an unusual species of insect - the Ganges Red. That evening he arrives on Aries Island and encounters the writer of the letter - Reginald Mather. At first Mather seems no more than an eccentric collector, happy to live in isolation on the island. But when Reeves unearths the horrific truth, he finds himself thrown headlong into a macabre nightmare that quickly spirals out of control. His life is in danger ...and Mather is not his only enemy ...Both gruesome and compelling, chilling and page-turning, this much-anticipated thriller from Dean Vincent Carter will delight older readers.

From the Inside Flap
WHEN ASHLEY REEVES, a young journalist working for freak-of-nature magazine Missing Link, receives a letter promising him the story of his life, his life is exactly what it might cost him.

Dear MR REEVES,
I have in my possession a specimen known as the 'GANGES RED', a unique strain of the AEDES AEGYPTI mosquito family, and the only one of its kind. If you were to ask an expert about it, they would no doubt tell you that it does not exist.

I have enclosed a map that will help you find your way to Aries Island... I own the only only house... so you should have no trouble finding me. A boast can be chartered from Tryst Harbour... It would be splendid if you could come right away.

I am keen to share my discovery with the world, but being a private man I need to keep certain details to myself. Therefore I ask, if it is possible, that you should not divulge the specifics of this letter to a third party.

I have the honour to be sir, your obedient servant,
Reginald C. Mather

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, 10 Mar 2006
I have to disagree with Garry Charles - in case he missed it, the book is MEANT to be for fourteen year olds.

Yes, the gruesomeness is only hinted at but that's exactly because it's for teenagers. Some, myself included, were raised on the unleashed horror of Stephen King but not all teenagers will be into that. This, along with the quotes from Lovecraft, are meant to introduce the young reader to a genre that he/she may otherwise have neglected in preference to the latest bio of Jordan (which sounds more like Garry Charles's cup of tea...)

A very enjoyable book, even for adults, and leaves you wanting to read more of the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius, 7 Feb 2006
By A Customer
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It's been a long time since I've read something with so much atmosphere. I couldn't put the book down!
Reminds me a little of Poe but I can see where his strong influences lie.

Thoroughly recommended and looking forward to the second book. It's a shame it's classed as a Children's book though because I think it would do very well in the general/adult market.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Little Gem, 9 Mar 2006
My younger brother, an avid reader, threw this book on my bed and told me to check it out. He knows I don't read much horror, let alone books for teenagers, and has never recommended anything before. I gave it a go out of curiosity. I can't say how happy I was to do so; Hand of the Devil really was quite brilliant. It has something very different in its approach that I haven't seen before, I was very much on that island with the characters and didn't like how it felt, which is exactly the way it should be with a creepy novel. Started and finished in less than 2 days, this book has renewed my faith in the genre. I'm not sure it's too suitable for much younger readers than 13 or so, but at the old age of 20, I was gripped start to finish. Next one, please....

5.0 out of 5 stars The Hand of the Devil
It has all the elan of a Lovecraft, Machen, Blackwood with a fresh contemporary voice. A terrifying yarn which will make young and old run for the mosquito repellent.
