Product Description

The Times Educational Supplement.

‘No one can match Shirley Hughes in the simple mastery of both words and pictures.’

Product Description

The book begins with a small girl in West Kirby who is obsessed with comics: "The Daily Sketch", "The Daily Express" and "The Mirror" - each of these newspapers helped to shape Shirley Hughes' career. Her story takes us from this gentle start, through World War II, and to a career which began with Art School in a blitzed Liverpool, led to Oxford and then to London. Shirley reflects on art and describes her own creative process as "the nearest thing I know to flying into the sun". The book is illustrated with sketches from her Italian sketchbooks, doodles from boring meetings, roughs from her picture books and perfectly executed paintings done just for the fun of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Life Drawing: a lovely book to dip in to, 9 Sep 2003
By A Customer
I decided to buy this book because I always loved Shirley Hughes's stories when I was a child. It is beautifully presented - there are so many sketches put together and photographs from Shirley Hughes’s youth. It is a warm and cosy book that is a joy to be dipped in to. Shirley Hughes is such a good author and this biography is full of more funny little anecdotes. It is interesting to see a range of pictures and sketches she has done that are not all linked to her children books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, 18 Jan 2009

(REAL NAME)
This is a beautiful book, a dream to read and with her excellent illustratons. I learnt a little of Miss Hughes's life but for me it left me wanting more. It goes into detail about her life as an ilustrator which is exactly what I expected but only gives a brief glimpse into her background and I as a reader of biographies was left wanting more!
Well worth reading and buying just for her work.
