Product Description

The second volume of a trilogy set in Suffolk and spanning five centuries of a family's history. In 1496 Josiana Greenwood, an illegitimate descendent of Martin Reed, awaits her secret lover's public execution. The story proceeds through some of England's most turbulent periods.

About the Author

Norah Lofts, best-selling author on both sides of the Atlantic, was born in Norfolk. She taught English and History at a girls' school before turning to writing full time. She also wrote under the pen name of Peter Curtis. A passion for old houses and their history inspired her classic 'House' trilogy, The Town House, The House at Old Vine and The House at Sunset. This meticulously researched trilogy of historical romances spans more than five centuries of Suffolk history, starting with Martin Reed, a fourteenth century serf and concluding with Frances Benyon in the mid 1950s. Lofts wrote more than 50 books, including historical non-fiction and short stories. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully evocative history of a house, 17 April 2001
By A Customer
In this, the first of Norah Lofts acclaimed trilogy, the story of a mediaeval house is chronicled by five of its inhabitants. Beginning at the time of the Peasants Revolt the story of the Reid familly, rewarded with a plot of land following a betrayal brought on by revenge is followed through the words of the very differnt characters who inahbit The Town House. Although this is the first in a series of three books, the story being continued in The House At Old Vine and the House at Sunset, it is complete in itself, however reading it will no doubt start a curiosity to know what happens in later centuries. By the end of the book athanks to Miss Lofts wonderfull recreation of time and place readers will be as familier with The Town House and its setting of Baildon as they are of their own. .

5.0 out of 5 stars Fist published in 1963, 23 May 2009

'The House at Old Vine' is the second book of a trilogy. I last read Norah Lofts' books when I was in my twenties. I am now 62! When I noticed that several of her books had been re-printed, I decided to give them another go! I started off with the first of the trilogy: 'The Town House' and, my goodness, I couldn't put it down! Norah Lofts really brought the characters to life and the historical detail was fascinating and never boring. I couldn't wait to read 'The House at Old Vine' and it didn't disappoint. I have since read the last in the trilogy 'The House at Sunset'. I didn't expect Norah Lofts' books to hold the same fascination for me that they did when I was young - but I was wrong!
