In this collection of sexual fantasies, each chapter deals with a different sexual theme. The introductory sections to each chapter explore those themes and the reasons why taboo subjects are a recurring factor in fantasy.

Mission statement about the Book of Women's Sexual FantasiesWhat I set out to achieve with this book was to debunk various myths which have grown up around female sexual fantasy. One mail shot resulted in over 2000 responses from women from all over the English-speaking world, and a couple of hundred of them make up this no-holds-barred collection. The subject is of consistent interest, largely due to the diversity of the female sexual imagination. The women who have contributed to this project have relished putting together their contributions, and the result is a stunning catalogue of elaborate and highly explicit thoughts. Not for the faint-hearted! The fantasies collected in this book are largely devoid of guilt, and are about self-indulgence - the greatest of all female sins (sic). The fantasies are organised into categories with titles including Bondage, Punishment and All the Trimmings, and 'Vampires, Beasts and OTher Beings'. Popular cultural influences on our sexual imaginations are investigated, from pop stars to films, fashion and fairy stories. There's even a section on the role punk music played in changing the course of female self-identity.
The taboos are also explored: for instance, the common misnomer, 'rape fantasy' usually applies to fantasies no more shocking than those where the object of YOUR desire is overcome with passion for YOU. In this case, the 'myth' is perpetuated by a problem of vocabulary; there isn't a 'friendly' word which sums up this particular desire. Maybe 'narcissistic' or 'submissive' is better, but the problem is that it's not as snappy a label. Bust those taboos!
I've looked at the history of patriarchal Western religious dogma, too, which has taught us to feel a sense of shame instead of celebration about the fun we can have with our bodies, and the hypocracy which still exists around this subject in certain quarters. Although things are getting better, we shouldn't become too complacent about the ownership of our bodies. Reclaim pleasure, rejoice in life, and practise kindness to all living things. Enjoy!
