To be honest I didn't much like 12 Step Fandango, the prequel to Alligator Strip. Too dark for my liking, so I was wary about this one with its cheerful yellow cover. So glad I bought it. Its the perfect crime caper, delivering everything you could want from a thriller. Martin Brock (the "hero" of 12 Step Fandango)turns up in Florida, living on a Trailer Park on the Redneck Riviera and getting involved in a quite ingenious con scheme. The names are brilliant: the psychotic, gun-fixated drug dealer is called Brad Luck. His ex-fiancee, with whom Martin unwisely falls in love, is Sherry-Lee Lewis, but best of all is Eugene Renoir, Martin's boss and the genius behind the scheme. He's an expert grifter and served in Vietnam in the US marines, but he has a little secret that I won't give away. Suffice to say he likes to use moisturiser(!)There's a big black guy who lives on the trailer park who's been cursed by a voodoo priest and believes he is being followed around by demons. He can't take three steps with out looking over his shoulder. His name is Turn Back Jack. The book is full of madness like this - there's a laugh on every page and some truly inspired comic moments, as well as some passages of extreme terror. Like a really well-crafted film, there's so much going on in Alligator Strip that it's worth a second read just to get the jokes you missed. If you've ever bought a Carl Hiassen and felt that there was something missing, buy Alligator Strip. Its all in there, including the rattlesnakes. Ten out of ten.

Just read this book in one day. Started in the morning and finished at bedtime. I think the word is "unputdownable." Very, very funny. Kept laughing out loud, much to my partners annoyance. Now he's reading it and its him laughing out loud. Would make a great film. A great book to read in the summer on the beach or by the pool. Not too heavy and really exciting (the chapter with the snakes is HORRIBLE)with a great twist at the end. Not read Twelve Step Fandango but will now.

I can normally judge a book by how quickly I read it. If the prose and story are entertaining I will fly through it. That was the case with Alligator Strip a great little crime caper with some good characters.

Nothing too taxing or in depth but some laugh out loud moments.

PS. If you don't like snakes, skip the chapter with the rattlesnakes.
