This is a very readable account of the myths and reality surrounding the discovery and development of penicillin. It is detailed without being dry; it is scientifically literate but does not lose sight of the frailties of its human participants.

The largely undeserved adulation heaped on Alexander Fleming is described at length (he discovered penicillin, but it was Florey's team who went on to purify and produce it), as is the vital but overlooked work of Norman Heatley ('Without Heatley, no penicillin').

Perhaps the book could have gone into a little more detail about the nature and use of penicillin itself, but this may have reduced its accessibility to the general audience. A minor quibble.

Anyone interested in the history of medicine should know the penicillin story, and this book is an excellent telling of that story. Recommended.
